American Hudson River School Painter, 1826-1900 ..American painter. He was a leading representative of the second generation of the HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL, who made an important contribution to American landscape painting in the 1850s and 1860s. The son of a wealthy and prominent businessman, he studied briefly in Hartford with two local artists, Alexander Hamilton Emmons (1816-84) and Benjamin Hutchins Coe (1799-1883). Thanks to the influence of the Hartford patron DANIEL WADSWORTH, in 1844 he became the first pupil accepted by Thomas Cole. SPADA, Lionello
Italian Baroque Era Painter, 1576-1622 Italian painter, active mainly in Emilia. His signature was an L placed across a sword [Ital. spada=sword]. His work shows influence of the grand manner of the Carracci, as in The Burning of Heretical Books (San Domenico, Bologna), and of Caravaggio's naturalism, seen in dramatic religious and genre scenes such as The Way to Calvary (Parma). In his late works his manner became softer and warmer under Correggio's influence. An example is The Marriage of St. Catherine (Parma).
Benjamin West Clinedinst
Illustrator and Painter. American , 1859-1931 was an American illustrator and painter, born at Woodstock, Va. He studied for a year in Baltimore and for five years in Paris under Cabanel and Bonnat and first attracted attention in New York with his illustrations for Leslie's Weekly. He was best known as the illustrator of Thomas Nelson Page's Unc' Edinburg, the works of Hawthorne, Stevenson, and Mark Twain, although he worked also in oils and water colors. His sympathetic collaboration with the author gave his work an especial charm. He was awarded the Evans prize of the American Water-Color Society in 1900. In 1947.
Niccolo Cassana
Italian , 1659 - 1714 was an Italian painter born in Venice and active during the late-Baroque. He trained with his father, Giovanni Francesco Cassana, a Genoese painter, who had been taught the art of painting by Bernardo Strozzi. He painted a "Conspiracy of Catiline" for the Gallery at Florence. Having painted portraits of the Florentine court, and also of some of the English nobility, Nicoletto was invited to England, and introduced to Queen Anne, who sat to him for her likeness, and conferred on him many marks of favour. He died in London in 1714
